| Jennifer Pietenpol, Ph.D.: "...funds like those from the Kleberg Foundation are crucial to advancing cancer research." |
Robert and Helen Kleberg left a legacy that is much bigger than the 825,000-acre South Texas ranch know as the King Ranch. The legacy of this very hardworking, generous couple lies in their namesake, the Robert J. Kleberg and Helen C. Kleberg Foundation which has given over $7 million to cancer research at Vanderbilt University. Five years ago the family established the Robert J. Kleberg and Helen C. Kleberg Center for Cancer Genetics and Genomics. Investigators supported by this Center are developing and applying the most cutting-edge technologies and approaches to early cancer detection and personalized therapy.
Through their generous support, the Kleberg Foundation has significantly accelerated research progress in lung, colon, breast and head and neck cancer at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. Ongoing research is aimed at developing practical early detection methods and new targeted and combination therapies to kill cancer cells with fewer side effects. The generous support of this Texas family has enabled us to move the best scientific discoveries to the clinic as quickly and safely as possible.
