Rockingham Memorial Hospital Regional Cancer Center

The Rockingham Memorial Hospital Regional Cancer Center, located in Harrisonburg, Va., opened its doors in 1990. The need for the Center had been identified five years earlier by a long-range planning survey conducted by RMH - an independent, community hospital founded in 1912 and serving a seven-county area with a population of nearly 200,000. The survey revealed that the community and the RMH medical staff saw enhanced cancer care as the number one medical need in the area. This is not surprising, given the fact that the nearest comprehensive cancer care at the time was more than 60 miles away.
The RMH Regional Cancer Center's mission is three-fold:
- To provide state-of-the-art, individualized cancer care to patients through a multidisciplinary team approach;
- To educate the public regarding preventive measures and the importance of early diagnosis and treatment; and
- To provide appropriate rehabilitative services to patients and families.
Services offered at the Center include radiation therapy, medical oncology clinic, infusion center, care management, nutrition services, counseling, cancer registry and Image Recovery_ Center. Averaging 115 patients per day, the Center provides nearly 13,000 treatments per year. Four board-certified hematologists/medical oncologists and three board-certified radiation oncologists staff the center, along with nurses, a case manager, dietitian, research assistant and a support staff totaling 35.
The Center is accredited by JCAHO and by the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer, and meets the standards established by the CoC for a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program, including prevention, early diagnosis, staging, optimal treatment, rehabilitation, surveillance for recurrent disease and support services.
