CBSA Philanthropic Activities

The Cancer Biology Student Association organizes events to provide students opportunities for volunteering and outreach in the greater-Nashville community. These events are primarily focused on, but not limited to, cancer-related issues. Annual events include a silent auction to benefit Gilda’s Club Nashville, providing a meal at the local Ronald McDonald House, and a chili-cook-off to benefit the Phillip J. Browning fund. In addition, we encourage students to get involved in larger events in Nashville such as the Race for the Cure. A list of events for the 2006-7 academic year:

  • November 17, 2006 – Silent Auction to Benefit Gilda’s Club Nashville
Held annually at the cancer biology departmental retreat in Cadiz Kentucky, this event allows cancer biology faculty, students, and staff to bid on items donated by their colleagues as well as local businesses. All the money raised is donated to Gilda’s Club Nashville, an organization that provides social and emotional support for cancer patients and their families.
  • January 26, 2007 – Dinner at the Ronald McDonald House
The Ronald McDonald House provides a “home away form home” for families with children being treated at Vanderbilt and other Nashville hospitals. CBSA purchases food and prepares a meal to serve the 30-40 people staying in the house.
  • April 5, 2007 – Easter Goody Bags for the Children’s Hospital
Every Easter, the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital provides goody-bags for children staying in the hospital during the holiday. Items range from arts and crafts supplies to movies and music. Prior to the holiday CBSA will provide some of these items and put them together into bags to be distributed to the children.
  • May 4, 2007 – Annual Chili Cook-off
Cancer Biology faculty, students, and staff all submit their homemade chili for the rest of the department to taste and judge. All the money raised benefits the Philip J. Browning Memorial Scholarship Fund.
