Colorectal Cancer Facts

  • 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. for men and women
  • This year, 140,000 new cases will be diagnosed, and 56,000 will die from the disease
  • With screening, most colon cancer is preventable.
  • If found early, it is highly treatable.
  • Risk increases with age – all men and women age 50 and older should be screened.

Colorectal Cancer: 6 Steps to Lower Your Risk

  • 1. Get regular colorectal cancer screenings beginning at age 50, or earlier, if family history(colonoscopy is the most thorough).
  • 2. Eat 25-30 grams of fiber each day from fruits, vegetables, whole grain bread and cereals, nuts and beans.
  • 3. Eat a low-fat diet
  • 4. Eat foods with folate such as leafy green vegetables
  • 5. Drink alcohol only in moderation, if at all, and don’t use tobacco.
  • 6. Exercise at least 20 minutes, 3-4 days a week.
