Profile

Mark Koury’s research interests are in erythropoiesis (the production of red blood cells), apoptosis (programmed cell death) as it relates to blood cell production. He is studying the role of macrophages in red blood cell development, how reticulocytes formed in vitro by erythroblast enucleation complete their differentiation in mature erythrocytes, and the determination of sensitivity of leukemias to chemotherapeutic agents.

His clinical practice is restricted to hematology at the VA Medical Center.  He sees patients with low or high red blood cell counts, low white blood cell counts, low or high platelet counts, leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, Hodgkin's disease, and disorders related to abnormal clotting or bleeding.  He has an interest in nutrition and its relationship to the blood.  He is interested in three specific nutrients -- folate, vitamin B12, and iron.  His other clinical interest is related to the hormone erythropoietin (EPO) and its use in the treatment of anemias.
