Dr. Shu's research for last 28 years has been primarily focused on assessing the independent and/or interactive effects of environmental exposures (e.g., radiation, occupational exposures), lifestyle factors (e.g., smoking, alcohol consumption, diet), and host susceptibility in the etiology and prognosis of various cancers. She has authored or co-authored >600 research papers in peer-reviewed life science journals addressing a large range of significant issues related to the epidemiology and prevention of cancer and other chronic diseases. Her research has generated valuable information on the influence of lifestyle (e.g., soyfood and tea consumption, low intensity exercise), infection (e.g. H. pylori) and genetic susceptibility on development and prognosis of breast, stomach and colorectal cancers which is directly relevant to prevention of these cancers. Dr. Shu is the PI of a population-based cohort study of 61,500 men which was initiated in 2001 and the Vanderbilt Training Program in Molecular and Genetic Epidemiology of Cancer.
