What Is New and Emerging? Carcinoid Tumors to the Liver
Further analysis of all of the above therapeutic interventions is required in order to find the most effective treatment regimens. Perhaps combinations of therapies will have a synergistic effect, producing improved survival.
One emerging modality, which has been described over the last several years, is liver transplantation. Because of the indolent nature of the disease and the diffuse nature of metastatic disease in the liver, several groups have begun trials of liver transplantation for this disease. Two groups have noted increases in survival with this technique, but controversy exists as to whether this constitutes an efficient use of limited donor organs.
