What is Melanoma?

Melanoma accounts for 4% of skin cancers, but it is the most serious of all skin cancers and causes about 75% of skin cancer deaths. The most important warning signs for melanoma are:

  • Changes in the size of a mole
  • Changes in the shape of a mole
  • Changes in the color of a mole
  • Mole with more ragged borders
  • Scaliness, bleeding, or change in appearance of a bump or nodule
  • Change in sensation, itchiness, tenderness, or pain of a bump or nodule
  • Spread of pigmentation beyond its borders
