Vanderbilt-Ingram Celebrates Cancer Survivors’ Day With New Video

May 27, 2010

In celebration of National Cancer Survivors Day, patients, faculty and staff of the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center participated in a new video that was posted today to YouTube. The video, which runs just over one minute and features messages about hope, survivorship and discovery, will have its first large screening at the center’s annual Celebration of Cancer Survivorship event on Sunday, June 6. You can view the video below or click here.

All cancer survivors, family members, friends and health care professionals who care for cancer patients are invited to this free event in the Vanderbilt Student Life Center, 310 25th Avenue South, Nashville.

This year’s celebration will feature the Lilly Oncology On Canvas ™ art exhibition honoring the physical and emotional journeys people face when confronted by a cancer diagnosis. The free public exhibit, which is touring communities nationwide, will showcase 25 select pieces of art from the 2008 Oncology On Canvas™ competition.

Viewing for the art exhibit will begin at 1:30 p.m., followed by a reception. The main program, which includes survivorship recognition and an uplifting candle-lighting ceremony, will be held 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Rachel Lozano, three-time survivor of Askin’s tumor of the spinal cord, is this year’s keynote speaker. Lozano is an artist, writer, student and nationally-known inspirational speaker.

A special “Swingin’ Safari” event gives children who have been touched by cancer a chance to go bananas for fun and games.

The annual survivorship event is co-sponsored by the American Cancer Society and the Tennessee Cancer Coalition and is open to all cancer survivors regardless of where they received their cancer treatment.

Free parking is available in the 25th Avenue Garage, with continuous shuttle service to the event.
