Cancer Center's Sheila Bates Lauded for Work with Cancer Queens

Sheila Bates, L.C.S.W., community outreach manager in Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center’s Office of Patient and Community Education, has been named the Rural Health Worker of the Year by the Rural Health Association of Tennessee.

Bates was nominated for her work in the development of the “Cancer Queens! A Cancer Prevention Musical Revue.”
The live “edutainment” program, designed to inform women about healthy lifestyle habits, is project of Vanderbilt-Ingram’s Office of Patient and Community Education. The revue includes performances by employees at Vanderbilt-Ingram and other community partners.
It features lively and humorous messages about diet, exercise and sun protection based on the public health education initiatives of the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Tennessee Cancer Coalition. Since 2008, the program has reached 4,000 women in 21 Tennessee counties.
“Based on the feedback from our audiences, I truly believe this approach to health education is a beneficial and effective way to deliver the message about maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” Bates said.
The Cancer Queens at their debut performance, singing Fruits and Veggies, set to the music of Boot Scootin' Boogie and encouraging women to eat fruits and vegetables to improve their health and reduce their risk of cancers.
