Research Specialty:
Structural NMR studies of proteins, protein-protein and protein-nucleic acid interactions
Research Description:
Our research is focused on structural studies of the specificity of protein-protein and protein-nucleic acid interactions. We use multi-dimensional solution NMR spectroscopy as a primary experimental technique. It provides details of conformation as well as molecular dynamics of proteins and nuceic acids in solution.
We focus on proteins of human pathogenic bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). Based on our structural studies, we recently suggested biochemical functions for two previously uncharacterized proteins. H. pylori is a bacterium that infects the stomachs of around one third of the US population and half of the world population, and is probably the most common human bacterial infection. To accomplish this, H. pylori a neutralophilic organism, employes multiple mechanisms. Our long term goal is a structural and biochemical understanding of H. pylori signaling and transcriptional regulation in acidic environment.
