We can't make the decision for you, but we can make it a little easier.
Finding the right cancer facility is not an easy process – especially when you have so many other questions and concerns on your mind. However, it's one decision you can't afford to make without the proper information. Knowing that, we've outlined some key questions to consider as you begin your search.
How many patients with your type of cancer does the center treat?
Cancer is not a single disease. It's a collection of more than 100 different ones, each with its own characteristics, treatments and challenges. Generally speaking, the more a center works with a specific type of cancer, the better they become at treating it.
Does the center have teams of specialists in your type of cancer? Do they meet regularly to discuss cases?
These collaborative boards allow all the specialists involved with a particular patient to share insights and thoughts. They also help ensure that the right diagnosis is made and that the best treatment plan is developed.
What do objective, professional organizations, like the National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, or the Commission on Cancer say about this center?
A number of organizations review and monitor cancer programs. These "third-party" evaluations can give you valuable insights on the quality of care that each center provides.
