Profile

The overall goal of my research is to develop novel engineering approaches to measure, understand, and control cellular metabolism. In particular, my lab’s contributions often involve advances in metabolic modeling and flux analysis that enable new applications in biomedical research or biomanufacturing. I developed the first publicly available software package (INCA) capable of both isotopic steady-state and nonsteady-state flux analysis. My lab has successfully applied INCA to achieve several breakthroughs, including the first comprehensive 13C flux studies of photosynthetic bacteria and plant leaves. We are currently applying stable isotope-based flux analysis to assess metabolic phenotypes in a variety of cellular models, including hepatocytes [1], pancreatic islets, cancer cells, and immune cells [2]. We are also adapting these techniques to in vivo disease models [3,4]. I am currently the PI of an NIH R01 award, an NIH U01 award, and a T32 training grant.
