Profile

Reed A. Omary, M.D., M.S., a practicing interventional radiologist, is Chairman of the Vanderbilt University Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences. He has served in leadership roles within the American Cancer Society, the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR), and the Radiological Society of North America. He was Chair of the SIR Foundation Grant Review Study Section from 2007-2011, and currently participates as a full member of the NIH Medical Imaging Study Section. As a principal investigator, Dr. Omary has received NIH funding for two separate R01 projects (one clinical, one pre-clinical) to develop image-guided therapies for hepatocellular carcinoma. He was previously vice-chair of research of the Northwestern University Department of Radiology. His arrival at Vanderbilt University in 2012 has helped promote the growth of interventional oncology across the clinical, research, and training missions of the medical center. Dr. Omary has been a co-investigator on several multi-institutional clinical trials for liver-directed therapies for hepatocellular and metastatic liver cancer. He has served as a principal or co-investigator on several training grants, including the NIH T32 Graduate Training Program for Magnetic Resonance Imaging and the NIH R25 Cancer Nanotechnology in Imaging and Radiotherapy. Dr. Omary is very proud of his trainees, who have collectively been awarded 35 national and 17 local research prizes.
